Title: Movies/Films etc on jacobite history? Post by Henrik_B._Boegh on 12/10/04 at 12:15:04
Hello all my fellow jacobites!
Appart from Culloden by Watkins, do any of you know about any films/movies on the 45? It may be fact or fictional. I've also seen one Battle of the Clans (or something, narrated by Brian Cox) at history channel and Great Battles: Culloden Moor 1746 at the Discovery channel. Cheers, Henrik |

How about The White Cockade partially filmed at the Culloden reenactment in Milford, NY back in like '98 if my memory serves. I can't even find my copy so I don't have anymore info right now...

"The White Cockade" was only produced for release in the UK on UK machines only. I went to buy it when I went to Culloden in OCtober at their museum, but the guy said that it wasn't going to be released in the US for at least another year.
Bummer........ Chad |

well if we're talknig about the same film (by Mule & Johnny Films) that is bad news. it means i'll have to buy the new release when it comes out. found my old copy and for the first time noticed that the tape label has "Preview Copy" on it. picked this one up probably five years ago in a little town near Rochester, NY named Fairport. that was back in the last few years of VHS popularity. hopefully we'll see this on DVD...

I think chad is thinking about another whitecockade.
the one that was Shot over here at Milford is hard to come by but its still out there. the last place i saw it being sold was in Dunedin Florida by the folks at the Scottish banner. Over all I liked it and the folks from Mule and Jonny were the nicest folks around. As to others Chassing the deer....Great idea...but It really fell short for Me (As did the Movie the Bruce done by the same production Company as a matter of fact alot of the same cast is in the Bruce that is Chassing the deer) Then there are the endless documentarys that were done about the period using stock footage from chassing the deer Which all of them have a Very large pro Hanoverian P.O.V. And then there were the movies that have been lost in preproduction...there were supossed to be three movies about the 45 coming out over the next three years. Two about Flora Mcdonald One obaout Charles edward Stuart With SKy Captian Him self playing ole "Charlie" and then there was the opus By Robert Carlye about 5 brothers who go fight for the prince and end up being sent to Northe america to fight ten years latter in the seven years war All of these "picks" have fallen on their butts. but hey i still hold out hope Collin |

Collin is right about the movie "The White Cockade" by Mule and Johnny Productions. It was filmed and produced in North America and is different from the one Chad is referrring too. I've seen that one in Scotland and its still only available in European format. As for "our" White Cockade, I know that this summer The Old Guard (theoldguard.com) had at least one copy. The owner is Greg Hanbuch, a friend of our events. While I may be biased I thought it was well done and a fair representation of both sides.
Chasing The Deer is entertaining and not too bad overall, though it does have a Hanoverian bias. Mind you I'd love to have their Cumberland at our events! There's off course the famous BBC version of the Battle of Culloden done in B&W in the 60's but its pretty bad. Other than that, most others I've seen are low budget documentaries. I too have heard the '45 related movies planned have been shelved for now. Perhaps we'll see something in the new year. all the best, Chris |

Should add that in UK circles "Chasing the Deer" is known as "Chasing the Turkey"..a certain Author was tech. advisor & stills keep turning up in his books.....

That Cumberland did rock... Altough please Mr Timm I beg you do the chessy French accent once for Me... Just one line from the movie....Right before Culloden he States from horse back "ohh how very Celtic" everytime i hear that it sends me into giggles... Also I must introduce yall to chassing the deer the drinking game. Everytime you see an extra/reanactor notice hes being filmed and attempting to pretend he was staring right at the camera take a drink... ever time C.E.S. says something in a horrid pythonesck french accent take a drink. Everytime Brian blessed goes into a dietribe about his past...that a another cast memeber interuputs for no reason...take a drink Evertime you see a ECW kit take a drink...well you get the point |

Errol Flynn's "Master of Ballantre" is great entertainment in a true Flynn genre.

Do you know if "Master of Ballantre" is out on DVD?? I'm a great fan of Flynn, so...
Is it possible to get "Chasing the Deer"(or Turkey for that matter) on DVD in Europe?? I've done some searching but haven't found it yet... Cheers, Henrik |

Lest we forget "Bonnie Prince Charlie" [1948] starring David Niven. I have this on vhs, & do not know if its available on dvd. Its a pro-Jacobite overly romantic look at the '45 & the "romance" between the Prince & Flora MacDonald, but I enjoy watching it. The rising of the standard & the battle scenes in "Master of Ballantre" were lifted from this film. Another that touches upon the Jacobites (post '45) would be Disney's "Kidnapped". And pre-Jacobite (the '15) would be "Rob Roy". ;) |

There was a version of "Kidnapped" with Michael Caine, and who can forget the Flynn version of "Master of Balantrae"

I seem to recall a version of "Kidnapped" with Michael York (or was it Richard Thomas?), but I'm really hazy on the details -- was this the same one with Michael Caine (I'm not familiar with that one). Oh, and just now I recall that a year or two ago the Hallmark/Family channel aired a 1995 remake as well, with Armand Assante playing the Allen Breck Stuart <sp.> character. Thanks for jogging my memory ;) |

I just watched the david nivens version of BPC and found it a horrid film, but on the bright side my friends and i found a drinking game for it too. Everytime they qoute a jacobite song as main text for the characters... take a drink. Tell you the truth listening to the dialog for the songs used as text was the highlight of an otherwise terrible romantic 1940's film. oh wait my bad, check out the swords and especially BPC's targe. In one shot Nivens waves the targe. Was that a reproduction made in the 1940's or was that one of the originals??? if it was a repro, then it puts the modern one to shame.

I found the "1746 the Last Highland Charge" (otherwise known as "Chasing the Deer") on e-bay and bought it. Very pleased... A rather funny movie (a lot of screw-ups and quite a few of the key charactors don't seem to fit in, if you know what I mean). So many costume details that makes me angry! But overall I enjoy it!
Hey! Have any of you guys noticed that Stuart Reid has managed to get a tiny role in the film? He slipps in front of camera during the disciplinning/punishment scene, and brings the Campbell lad away, and mutters "Come here" or something... Cheers, Henrik |

Hi Florian,
Yes! I like it very much. In fact I think it's the best documentary about Culloden that's made. I bought it from the British Film Institute's website; http://www.bfi.org.uk But they may not have it in their catalogue any longer... You might search for it on Ebay as well. hehe. I would like to see Chasing the Deer with German dubbing! :D Cheers, Henrik |

Have any of you by chanse seen the Battlefield Britain Series with Dan and Peter Snow? It's a documetary series with both reenactment and computer animations to make the battles become "alive". They made a program about Culloden as well (you can find it on DVD on Ebay). I think it shows some good reenactment and some cool animations, but overall I think the Snows have too much an offisial English view on most of the battles they present in their seiries, including Culloden.
In their presentation of Culloden they sort of gives the impession that the Hielanders were barbarians with an out-dated way of life and pretty much had it coming :( Cheers, Henrik |

Ah, Henrik, you confirm the adage, "History is written by the victors, songs by the vanquished."

I recently saw (yet again, thanks to BBC love of repeats ;D) the Snow's Battlefield Britain and have to agree that they do seem slightly biased. But then Vicar Wm Gray Beard Abernethy's comment is quite right.
The trouble when watching a film concerning something you have a passion about is that you can't watch it without picking fault with it (normally to the annoyance of those around you!!). My passion since I was 12 (and I'm 39 this May) has been the Great War and I can't watch a WWI film without pulling it too shreds. |

Now that is so true, Vicar!
I do the same, Lee. I taped that Battlefield Britain episode (along with the one about the Boyne, which is far more provocing episode than the one with Culloden), so I can watch it and get annoyed time and time again!!! Lovely :D HEHE If you ever get the chanse see the Great Battles series which Discovery Channel made some years ago you should see the episodes about Naseby, Boyne and Culloden (and perhaps Blenheim as well). I think they are quite good. It has a far more balanced script, trying to stick with facts. I taped the episodes about Culloden and Boyne and Hastings and I watch them from time to time. Only pity is that there are too few reenactors in them and the episodes lasts only half an hour! Cheers, Henrik |
