Post by Colin_MacLowry on 04/12/05 at 13:17:08
Hello all,

My name is Colin MacLowry. I'm 25 years old and a 14th ceuntry Scottish re-inactor. I'm currently residing in the lovely state of NY. I'm in need of your assistance. I've recently been given the honor of being named "Head" of my household (Clan Loch Laven) I'm looking for authentic Scottish garb for a two week long re-inactment. Also, I'm looking for where to get period shoes and Scottish tents used around that time. Any information you can give me will be much welcolm. Thank you for thaking to time to read this. Cheers'

Colin

Welcome, Colin. Most of us here reenact the 17th & 18th centuries. To help you with your search, might I suggest spending a little time reading through the archives. Then do what I did and start asking questions pertaining to the specific information you are looking for. Chances are you'll find a great deal before having to ask. Another source to look for goods would be to go to http://www.1745rising.org/ and click on the links page for vendors. Hope this is of some assistance.

Welcome again,

Daniel

Going back as far as the 14th century, you'll likely have more luck making your own stuff, as there tends to be quite a bit of inaccuracy in commercially-made gear, and you'll do better to know exactly WHAT you're looking for instead of hoping to find a vendor whose attention to historical detail is wholly reliable. So, at the very least, know what kind of garments and accoutrements you're looking for, and you'll stand a better chance of finding it. But relying on vendors to be historically accurate can  cause some very expensive mistakes. Off the top of my head, I can't recommend a good premodern supplier; most of the guys I know who do pre-1600 stuff make all their own gear because buying is either prohibitively expensive or what's for sale doesn't meet their personal standards of accuracy.

Try the following for a start:
http://www.reconstructinghistory.com/celtic/index.html
and Sharon Krossa's site at:
http://www.medievalscotland.org/clothing/

You should be able to at least get an idea of exactly what you're looking for...IME, finding/making stuff is dead easy, it's knowing what you need that's a pain.

Hi, Colin!

What part of NY State are you from?  I live near Binghamton....

Those websites the webmistress sent you should help you alot.  Are you doing highland or lowland Scots?  The lowlanders would look basically the same as the fighting men from England in terms of clothing, arms, and armor.  Highlanders would be about the same as the Irish of the same period, and were in fact referred to as being "Irish," because of their language and origins.

In neither case should you dress like the "Scots" in the movie BRAVEHEART...!
