   yet another annoying topic by yours truely!  see what happens when interested college kids start up another time-period?

   the topic this time is Songs I can sing (No claims as to how well) while we're marching, sitting around and during other activities?
   I do know a few that fall into this time frame as well as F&I, and if you'd like I can post the lyrics.  they are:
 Over the Hills and Far Away (Beggar's Opera 1729)
 Whiskey in the Jar (Classic)
  A'Roving (unknown)
  strike the bell 2nd mate (Again, unknown)
  The Gerry-Owen (Irish, early 18th century)
   I'm working on learning "Aurthor MacBride" as well.

   any other songs, or comments on these?  also, someone who plays an instrument that won't drown me out should learn some of these to do at Colluden.  or, if we can get half the army of king James to sing "Whiskey in the Jar" on the way to battle, that would be awesome, with a few pipes of course!

I will email you a MS Word document file that contains a few Jacobite songs, some we have already song and do a fairly good job at during ceileidhs and just sitting around the campfire at night at our events.  My future daughter-in-law is a very talented viola player, her mother is very talented on the recorder and penny whistle, her father is very talented on the bodhran and my son is showing promise learning the cello, and is very talented on the penny whistle and bodhran, and Missy Clark, the new international Chief of the Clann of the Wolf is quite good on the three-stringed dulcimer, just to name a few of the many musicians that will be at the Culloden event in May.  We also have a Clann of the Wolf piper who will be there with his Highland great pipes and Scottish small pipes.  See you there, and be ready to share your talents at the ceileidh that Saturday, and, of course, I will look for you in the congregation at the 18th century Scottish Presbyterian worship service on Lord's Day morning there!

I think "The Bloody Fields of Flanders" be an nice Song, when it plays with bagpipes!

It has been done, my friend.
Interestingly, my father's father served alongside a Highland regiment (I believe Kaiser Willie's men referred to them as "The Ladies From Hell") in Flanders during WWI.

  Sounds good.... might be on par with the Gerry Owen, if I can get the Lyrics...

Personally, I prefer singing Braes o' Killiecrankie, Bonnie Dundee (even if the text has been changed since the original song sung during the 18th century), Wha' Wadna Fecht Fer Charlie, Come O'er the Stream Charlie, Hey Johnny Cope (which is written some time post the uprising), and Haughs o' Cromdale. I know the lyrics and melodies to these songs, and sing them a lot (even at work :D ). I sometimes sing Whisky in the Jar, Wild Rover, and Marrybones, but that's usually only when either Guinness, ale, og Whisky is involved ;)
There are so many good Scottish songs, that I feel that I can never learn enough!

Well, then post them!  
  the more we've got, the better repitoir we can all come up with, the better equiped we will be when we start singing when we're marching out to meet the Anglos.  the one time I was with a unit that sang the effect was beyond belief guys, I really think we shouild try it.

you know, I've hear that termm before, I believ ethe "Bearded Ladies from Hell" was also used by the French in the Napolionic wars, but I'm not sure.  
   but remember, the Huns took Highland charges when they had Machineguns to defend with, and they still gave ground.  you guys can be scarrier than Gas, machinegun fire and cannons that hurl 100s of pounds of explosivesa apparently.....

It's probably not only the ferrocity of their charge that made them so much dreaded by their foes... I'd guess it has something to do with the fear of catching a glimse of the Loch Ness monster, who reputedly hides underneath the kilt. ;D

I will.  I am also, coincidentally, extremely interested in the first world war.  this history thing is so wierdly linked it's scarry.
