Two books I would highly recommend are "On The Trail of Bonnie Prince Charlie" published by Luath press and written by David R Ross,Davids style makes it simple to follow and with him actually travelling to the places he describes  you get a good idea of the lay out of the land and what might be there now.
Another must have for reference purposes at least is "No Quarter Given" published initially by Aberdeen university press and more recently by Neil Wilson publishing in Glasgow, its the muster roll of the Jacobite army giving an insight into the army as a whole rather than just the leaders, such men as Peter Grant of Dubrach by Braemar who was the last survivor of Culloden to die in 1824.

No Quater given is fantastic....

Not only for the Muster roles to for each Regiments history...
One thing I found hard hitting is....yes We all know that this war was not as Black or white...as popular suedo historians have painted it in the past....(A.E. All Campbells Mackays Grants ect...were all Evil Hanovarians...and the Blessed McDonalds Camerons ect...were all the goodely and blessed Jacobites) this true was a civil war with brother vrs Brother father vrs Son ect. I knew this for a long time...But it never hit me until i read the book How true it was..

A prince can mak a belted knight, &&A marquis, duke, an a' that! &&But an honest man's aboon his might - &&Guid faith, he mauna fa' that! &&For a' that, an a' that, &&Their dignities, an a' that, &&

I must agree with Jacobite and Govanhill Jacobite that David R Ross' book on the trail of Bonnie Prince Charlie is a very good and Informative read but he also has written others for example A Passion for Scotland, On the Trail of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce which are all just as good to read. Another good book is The Prince in the Heather by Eric Linklater which tells of the Prince's exploits after Culloden until his escape to France
