I am just embarking on the study of the '45 and I would be grateful if someone could give me recommendations on what to read.
I have learnt, from 10 years of studying the Great War, that authors tell the same story in different ways, get the wrong facts or use myths as facts.

So far I have the following books:
Culloden Moor 1746 (Osprey. Stuart Reid).
Culloden (John Prebble)
No Quarter Given
Culloden and the '45 (Jeremy Black)
Like Hungry Wolves (Stuart Reid)

Many thanks in advance Smiley

To be a little more specific, I'm looking for books that give me an idea on;
1. Styles of clothing.
2. Weapons used.
3. Tactics used.
4. Notable people.

Hi Lee,
here are a few  books that will give you an overview of the '45 and also some useful background information:
-Over the sea to skye (John Selby)
-Charles Edward Stuart (David Daiches)
-The Jacobites (Frank McLynn)
-Damn Rebel Bitches: Women of the '45 (Maggie Craig)

Hope this helps!  Good luck with your research.

Hi Chris - Many thanks for the recommendations, greatly appreciated.
If that is your goodself in your avatar, then we have met in Scotland.
I stopped by the Culloden battlefield (1st visit) and you and your group were conducting a re-enactment. Brilliant!

That is me in the picture Lee, thank you for your kind words.  Ironically I am going  back to Scotland again next week to once again support the National Trust by doing demos at a number of their sights.  The bulk of the group is leaving tonight and will  be at Culloden over the weekend. I in turn will meet up with them Sunday and we will be at Glenfinnan for a couple of days  (Tuesday/Wednesday) and off from there.
I hope to see you again.

all the best,
Chris

Tim - It was the 9th April 2003 that I saw you at Culloden.
I wasn't expecting to get there until the following day but I managed to get ahead of schedule; which was lucky for if I remember correctly you were only there for the one day.
I got some good video footage of the event and some great photos and even managed to have a chat with you (I was wearing a Clan Chattan scarf at the time - but I wouldn't expect you to remember that! Grin).

Actually I do recall you because we had a good conversation which I remember and I also remember your scarf!  I'm glad it was a memorable experience for you, that is why I do it.  This is also a good reminder for me for my trip next week.
Good luck with your reading and I will talk to you when I'm back!

Hi,Lee,
If you are interested there's quite a healthy Jacobite re-enactment scene in the English Midlands..even if you don't want to play,it's nice to meet like minded people..e-mail me if you'd like more details!
