I got the new Osprey on the 45 at the weekend.

The Scottish Jacobite Army 1745-46.

A good read, and talks in reasonable length about the non-highland and even non-Scottish units in the army.

My only problem is the complete lack of Sporrans in the plates...

But, i'd still recommend getting it.

Mo' Chairdean-
(my friends)
Is this really a new book, or just a new cover for the old Osprey book that I've already got?  I want to pick it up if it's a new one.
And does anyone besides me think Reid is just the wee bit Hanoverian?
Thanks for all the great postings-
yours, aye-
beannich leibh,
Iain Ruaidh

Iain - I have had that feeling a couple of times, especially when seeing him on TV (BBC2, I think was the last station I saw him on).
Saying that, I do enjoy his books as they were the first ones I read on the '45.

Hi All,

Stuart Reid's a pretty nice guy, as I've corresponded
with him in the past trying to find info on the 1780-era
Highland regiments, but he does take the Hannoverian
point of view. I personally think his books are a good
starting point for 18th century Highlanders, but it really
irritates me that they're so poorly footnoted and referenced.
Not to mention his recreated kits need some work before
they can be considered "period".

I got the book.  I also have the other related Osprey books too.

So, what is the general opinion on Reid here.  On other forums, I've heard VASTLY differing opinions by those who know the era greater than I.  From what I know, it seems like good history, BUT I spread my interests SO far that I am not as knowledgeable on the era as I would like.

(I was advised to this site by another who goes by Woodsheal- a while back-, who I now know to be WELL respected in this field.  A discussion on another forum reminded me to return.  I recognize a NUMBER of names.  I FINALLY registered.)

It's on sale here, but in the U.S. only, they don't ship to Canada or Europe. GREAT DEAL, though, if you don't have a copy. You may need to cut and paste this link. Only $4.95!

Most of the info. is Ok and we have a feeling the artist may have "tried" to copy some of us from RaT, however we have sporrans, don't all look the same, and don't stand outside perfect white cottages.
Or put another way, the pics are rubbish.
