Thank you for the compliment, you are too kind  Smiley
The list really is endless. I've not been everywhere and I've lived here my whole life.
In fact to prove the point we're going to a Jacobite style event with private tour in Holyrood Palace this weekend and re-enacting scenes from the battle as well the following day.....never done that before Cool

Wim, Pick areas that you wish to visit and spend a couple of days in each e.g. Edinburgh, Stirling, Inverness, Fort William and then search out the individual sites nearby. I can think of 3 or 4 great sites within 25km of all of these places

Stirling: Stirling Castle, Sherrifmuir, Doune Castle, Doune gunworks(pistols), Falkirk battlefield and Callendar House(great display on battle).

Fort William: West Highland Museum, Highbridge cairn and skirmish site, Glenfinnan, Loch na Uamh

Inverness: Highland Folk Museum, Ruthven Barracks, Rout of Moy battle site, Culloden of course

Always include Edinburgh, maybe to round off the journey as it is easy to fly in to or out of and has ALL of the main art galleries and museums in Scotland with Jacobite displays, the Castle and Holyrood Palace as well as Prestonpans battle site nearby. It also has many bookshops to search through as well!!!

If you need more details let me know and I can try and think of a few more places that are more scattered (Killiecrankie, Dunkeld from 1689 etc.) areas around Aberdeen as well as more details on some of the others.

Scotland isn't that big but some of the roads are "interesting" to say the least so some journeys take longer than you might imagine especially in the Highlands but the scenery is usually okay so you can enjoy the views. I can try and work out how long things will take if you have a list of where you'd like to go or give my own personal view of certain places in relation to your interests and rate them for you.
Hope that helps
Cheers
Neil

Thanks Neil!

I would like to go to Skye too, cause my persona is comming from Skye.

I would like to be mobile, so I thought of going by car.
Is it wise to take the boat to newcastle and drive up to Scotland? How long is the drive from newcastle to Edinburgh?

Other option was fly over and rent a car... but that punches up the price of holiday.

We'll make a list and contact you!

Thanks!!

Wim, please remember that in the UK the people drive on the "right" side of the road (by "right" I really mean left).   Wink
So it is probably smarter to rent a car with the driver's seat on the right side of the car rather than the left.

Edinburgh is a very nice place, and the National Museum of Scotland is a must. Some of the most beautyful swords you can think of are there...
And if you get the chanse to visit Culloden you shouldn't let the opportunity slip away. It's one of the strangest places I've ever visited.

Cheers,
Henrik

Henrik,

I know they drive on the right left side...hehe...
I don't have big financial situation to rent a car and ride x thousand miles.... so that's why I am considering taking my own car and save the car rent.

The National museum of Scotland is on the wish list and Culloden is on the MUST SEE list  Tongue

I don't mind lotsa miles in my own car, in a strange car i'm not so happy.... another reason to take me own car.

Aye, I have the same feeling about the car that I drive.

You're going next summer? Well, then the new visitors center at Culloden will be done, and you'll probably get an even greater experience than you'd get with the current center.

Cheers,
Henrik

Hi Wim
Yes driving to Newcastle is a pretty good option. It is about 120 miles from Edinburgh to Newcastle but it isn't motorway all of the way so it'll  take you about 2 1/2 to 3 hours depending on traffic.
Skye is easily accessible from Inverness (bridge) or Fort William( Mallaig ferry) but I'd recommend a couple of days for that as there is quite a lot to see on the island....though not a huge amount of Jacobite interest. It is a beautiful (if often wet) island. My grandfather came from Elgol in Sleat and we often went on holiday when I was younger.
Cheers
Neil

Hi Wim,
Just like most old towns and cities in Holland, Edinburgh and Inverness are both accessible by car but are both well known for their very compact town centres, one way systems, expensive parking and VERY busy rush hours. Public transport is the best way IN the city but not that good for touring outside.
Most Bed and Breakfast accommodation can be found on the outskirts of both towns and have decent parking. Most city centre hotels also have parking but it usually costs extra and you have to drive in the town centres....... not good if you aren't local!!!
Cheers
Neil

We were planning on going to stay in B&B's ... so no problem there... B&B in outskirts and public transport into town.

Thanks again Neil!

Ijmuiden - Newcastle is a 16 hrs ferry trip and 30 minutes car ride to ijmuiden and 1 hr to edinburgh... so it's a total of 17:30 hrs

car trip to zeebrugge is 2 hrs
zeebrugge rosyth is 18 hrs ferry
rosyth edinburgh is 15 minutes
so a total of 20:15 hrs

so almost 3 hrs more (5,5 hrs for the round trip)

price is almost the same... so I guess it will be ijmuiden newcastle.

But thanks anyway!
