In recent days my interest in Oglethorpe's highlanders in Georgia & his campaign(s) against the Spanish has been piqued (especially in light of the fact that a large body of the Mackay clan were involved).

Can anybody suggest any good books in print that can enlighten me further upon the subject?

Thank you.

Our group, Clan An Cu, portrays the Highland Independent Company of Darien on the Georgia coast.

I highly recommend "Scottish Highlanders in Colonial Georgia" by Anthony Parker (I believe).  It is a University of Georgia Press publication that is about 6 years old.  It covers what was going on in Scotland during the 1720s & 30s & ends about 1743.  Covers the Highlanders landing in 1736, Oglethorpe's seige of St. Augustine in 1740, & the battles of Gully Hole Creek and  Bloody Marsh in 1742.  Actual text is about 100 pages, but includes additional pages with rosters of the Highlanders.  It can be purchased from Fort King George State Historic Site, in Darien Georgia, or Fort Frederica National Monument, on St. Simons Island, Georgia.

Another highly recommended book (which I have not yet read) is British Drums on the Southern Frontier: The Military Colonization of Georgia 1733-1749, by Larry Ivers.  It has just been reprinted by the University of North Carolina Press.

Incidentally, we will be fighting the Spaniards in March, 2006 at Fort King George (recreating the Battle of Bloody Marsh at the Scottish Heritage Days.  You are welcome to join us if you like.

Good luck,

Britt
